SOUTH SHIRE a Little Hotel

A+ service, room we stayed in was perfect size with king bed. had an issue with heater first night but Inn Keeper was great to deal with and provided alternative heat source on first evening plus they have working fireplace (bonus++). We stayed 3 nights and just enjoyed ourselves during our visit. would definitely stay here again.

A delightful place to stay. We met up with two other couples, and we all loved the place. They went out of their way to accommodate us for dinner, setting us up in the parlor where could talk without disturbing other diners. Thai food was delicious. Our room had some nice touches such as an old telephone and typewriter. Heat was from a radiator and it kept us toasty warm. The mattress was very comfortable. We enjoyed having drinks in the parlor. Breakfast was delicious. We would definitely stay there again.

The South Shire Inn was absolutely perfect! The Otto Suite was beautiful and comfortable. The fireplace comes with duraflame logs and a lighter, making it super easy to use. Breakfast the next day was lovely as well. The Inn is within walking distance to the shops downtown. Highly recommend staying here!

Adorable and quirky place and a great value. We booked here to XC ski at Prospect Mountain. The weather didn’t cooperate, but we still had fun hanging out in Bennington and Manchester. We booked the Peach Room, which had a cozy bed and an enormous bathroom. The temperature went down to single digits one night and I was snug and warm. The Thai restaurant Taan has incredible food. We had dinner one night and it was the best Thai food I’ve ever had. There’s a communal area between the restaurant and lobby with a fireplace, piano, and tea and coffee bar. It was nice to sit by the fire with a cup of tea. The owner was really nice and fun to chat with.

My husband and I popped up to Bennington for a quick weekend away. This was our first time staying at South Shire. We knew we'd be arriving after the allotted check in time, but as per their instructions, let them know in advance that we'd be a little late, gave them an ETA, and let them know once we were on our way. There was a employee there to greet us with our key when we arrived, which made check in seamless. We booked the Wentworth room. Our room was directly off of the lobby, so we did hear the guests walking up and down the stairs and a little bit of kitchen noise in the morning, but it was nothing that caused issue at all. The room was nicely appointed with complimentary robes for use, lovely bar soap (Beekman 1802) and nice towels. We had fantastic water pressure (almost felt like a massage from the shower head) with no decline in the hot water. The bed was a higher bed with lovely soft sheets and a comfortable down comforter. The bed (mattress) itself wasn't super comfortable, and caused a bit of sleeplessness. The fireplace was stocked with a dura-flame log with instructions for use and added a lovely ambiance to our room. Wifi instructions were clearly marked, and a list of suggested local restaurants, as well as their own restaurant's menu, were displayed on the desk. There was no TV, but after a day of walking around we found we didn't miss it and just enjoyed each others company and conversation instead. We didn't eat at South Shire, opting instead to walk to a few local restaurants we know and love, but got a night cap (wine and beer) after getting back, served by the restaurant. We enjoyed sitting on the couch in the lounge by the fire. Overall, we felt the price was great, the location unbeatable, and service sufficient for what we wanted for the weekend. We'd love to see an updated mattress, but other than that, wouldn't change a thing! We'd overall give it a 4.5 out of 5, but it won't let that be an option on the rating system. Just left, my thoughts? The home itself was quite beautiful. Our room, the Gold Room, was at the top of very steep stairs. The room was beautiful and huge. The bed was quite comfortable and the fireplace an extra added little romantic atmosphere. I could imagine what it was like actually living there "back in the day". The home itself was beautifully decorated. Loved the beamed ceilings. My few compliments was, it was very cold Although the owner provided a space heater. And that room didn't have an on suite bathroom. Some rooms did but not all. The bathroom assigned to your room, is however, a private one. Oh and no tv nor refrigerator, which would have been nice. We did not try the restaurant. But it has a good rating. Overall, a very quiet weekend, during the daytime hours. If your looking for quiet and relaxing place, this is a great choice.

Such a cute little place to stay! Our room was clean and had a historic feel which we loved. The location was perfect to be able to walk into downtown Bennington. I wouldn't recommend the $10 breakfast since it was comprised of fruit with yogurt, stale bagels, and drinks (although the orange juice was really good). The staff was helpful and friendly, and overall, we really enjoyed our stay!

We truly enjoyed our visit. Everyone we dealt with was welcoming and accommodating. The house is so beautiful with unique finishings and details. We ate at the restaurant and it’s one of the best meals we have had. Delicious food with amazing service. Staying here was the epitome of delightful.
